Can someone explain why some of these have the sun coming from the back with a red heel and others have the sun on the side panel and black heel?

different shoe. haha yours are the first Hosoi Sk8 Hi, the ones with the rising sun on the side panel are the second Hosoi Sk8 Hi

Wolfs, actually it's the other way around. The pair with the sun entirely on the side, is the 2006 model, which is a retro of the OG ones from the 1980s, and the pair pictured above was a 2008? model...that also came in an Authentic, and a fancier box, with Hosoi artwork all over it.

Either way I like these right here (even though it's not the original model). Still on the hunt for the ERA*. Thanks for the info though.
